Until recently, pop star Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays fame was out of the limelight. His involvement in the ITV programme I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, where he came second, changed all that. After leaving the show, Ryder was asked what he would be spending the money on. "His teeth," he replied.
In fact according to reports Shaun is to pay around £25,000 on cosmetic dentistry. Obviously no one knows what he is getting done, but it got me thinking. What sort of cosmetic dentistry can you get for £25,000? One answer is a single arch implant fixed bridge, which apparently can cost anything from £10,000 - £25,000.
Been there, done that
Getting work done on his teeth is nothing new for Shaun Ryder. Four years ago he spent £10,000 and 6 hours in the dentist chair getting every single tooth capped or replaced with a dental implant. While this may appear rather extreme, Shaun admitted to reporters at the time that he hadn't been to see a dentist in 20 years. His Manchester-based dentist, Lance Wright said: "Shaun's teeth were as bad as you can get. Every tooth needed something doing to it."
Mr. Wright added: "He hasn't liked dentists in the past, but we had a few consultations before any of the work was done. We got quite friendly so it was more like a mate thing for him which he obviously found less intimidating."
A classy act
Unfortunately for Shaun, the misery of his teeth didn't end there. In 2009 he complained that during a show one of his implants fell out. A fan at the time reported the incident on his own web site saying: "His general slack demeanour was that of a man who was helped out of the bus bunk just before show time and then propped up on stage."
Shaun himself admits his years of abusing his body through drugs and not having regular dental check-ups is the basis for his problems. Let's hope spending his winnings from his appearance in I'm A Celebrity... is the last he has to spend.
Where it all began
Shaun was the vocal lead for many years with Happy Mondays. The Manchester-based band was formed in 1980, the original members being Shaun's brother Paul, who played bass, lead guitarist Mark Day, Paul Davis, keyboardist and drummer, Gary Whelan. Other members joined from time to time.
The Happy Mondays were discovered by Tony Wilson while they were playing at Manchester's famous Hacienda club. In late 1990, Paul McCartney said of the band: "I saw the Happy Mondays on TV, and they reminded me of the Beatles in their ‘Strawberry Fields' phase." The Mondays music has been described as a fusion of Indie pop, funk, house music and northern soul. Shaun Ryder is no longer with the band, but the group released their last album in 2007 entitled Uncle Dysfunktional. Their last appearance was in August 2010 at the Wizard festival in North East Scotland.
