Teeth whitening is a method used in maintaining the natural white surface of our teeth by replacing the present colour with the tooth whitening product that is carefully applied by a dentist. This type of procedure has been around for quite a while and it's been, so far, a safe and easy option for those who are interested in maintaining their teeth colour.
There are a number of reasons why some people might consider this option and they are usually because of one's choices of diet or lifestyle where for instance, someone who frequently consumes food and drinks that are slightly acidic or contain a fair bit of colouration may result in a gradual change in teeth colouration. Some examples of these types of drinks could vary from red wine, beverages, coffee and even fruits like Oranges (because of their level of acidity). To add to these, habits like smoking or inhaling harmful drugs could also lead to a change in the teeth colour.
What does it involve?
To start with, you must visit speak to your dentist if you are planning on using teeth whitening as a way of changing your present teeth colour in other for him/her to provide you with some professional knowledge and advice on whether or not you should do it. However, once they've decided that it will be a safe option for you, the first treatment will be done by them (the dentist) while you complete the rest of it on your own for the next 3 weeks.
Cost
Unfortunately, this isn't a service that is available at the NHS, therefore such a treatment can only be done in a private practise where prices may vary. So, the best advice would be to take your time on finding the best quote and weigh up your options on what you feel is best for you; e.g professional bleaching, laser or power lighting. But do not settle on the cheapest, as some background information on the dentist would be just as important.
What should you expect?
As long as you refrain from the choices of foods and drinks mentioned previously (and lifestyle), then a good teeth whitening Job should last for up to 3 years; however, results may vary between different individuals.
Some side effects may include sensitivity to cold weather, sore throat, painful gums etc. However, these effects usually last for a few days but if they remain persistent, then you should see your dentist.
If your teeth require repair, as well as whitening, you might want to consider having veneers fitted instead. Veneers consist of a thin layer of porcelain placed over the discoloured or chipped tooth to help create a Hollywood Smile.
